Lecture 4: Katie Lassen

3DD Day three:

We started today with working into our sketchbooks. I started to make structures which crossed the page, suggesting a bridge shape. I used many techniques such as folding, curling and cutting out to achieve different effects. I wanted to use white paper against the brown paper to show a contrast to the bridge like shapes. This was a task I did not enjoy however coming up with unique ways to cross the page was quite interesting.

Initial first ideas on bridge work. White on brown paper.
People models added to show size of bridge.
It was good to find out about the different pathways within 3DD. I felt that with my fine art background I would be able to expand and grow into different ways of creating projects. I feel that 3DD is not the pathway for me however I do find the concepts taught to be very interesting however it is not my strong point unfortunately.

We then had to build a bridge out of card and bamboo sticks as a group of around 7. This was exciting to work in such a big group; I enjoyed this task very much. As a group we decided that we wanted to create boxes which then made up into a bridge like shape taped to both sides of the tables. I suggested we set up a production line, where as a group we were all set different tasks. I was then appointed to be leader and helped our team with the making of our bridge. Two people were set to draw the net of the box, another two to cut out the net, one to put the box together, one to put the boxes together as a bridge and I went around helping each working point whilst the rest of the group switched after a while.
Stencil and Cutting out.
Sticking box together.
Teamwork also lifted spirits.
Sticking boxes together to create bridge.
Teamwork helped structure the bridge.
At first our group was very negative including myself I felt that the idea wasn't going to work and we wouldn't be able to make enough boxes in time. However after a while we realised it was going to work and our spirits rises helping us to push on the create the structure of the bridge. We realised it needed supposed so used the bamboo to hold it up. We crafted a strong structure that was taped to the table. We still kept to the rules.

Final bridge design.
After rushing to complete the bridge everyone watched each other's team test them out. The car was driven over the bridge. Although our bridge wasn't as wide as we would of liked it was able to hold the weight of the car which I something I am very proud of. I managed to film the car travelling over the bridge, to watch the video click the link below.
