3DD Day two:

Today we were presented with the task of creating a structure that could hold three balls above the ground. However we were only given spaghetti and a glue gun. This was really hard because I couldn't use curves as the spaghetti would break easily. Before creating my piece I started drawing designs. These were very tight at first so we all took part in an exercise which made our drawings look less neat and structured. We started by closing our eyes and scribbling, then placing the balls in what we had created. This made me think that what I was drawing before was very much based on how it would work so I lead away from this and started scribbling which helped me to enjoy this process a lot more.

After drawing I started to play around with a structure that would work based on what I had previously dawn. It was very hard to hold the spaghetti together with blue tack so I decided to go for it and glue the first structured piece. I did not know what I was doing whilst I was creating the piece although I tried out little ways to hold the balls without them touching. I wanted to resemble the scribbling I had previously drawn therefore kept the structure jagged and messy. I really enjoyed trying and testing which helped to achieve my final structure.

After completing the task I wanted to push myself to hold more balls within my structure. I started to add more and built around what I had already produced. It was difficult to balance and get things to stay with if the structure especially trying not to get burnt with the glue gun.

We then had to protect our spaghetti structure with only 2 pieces of A3 paper and 1 piece of A1 paper. I could only stick together using a pritt stick which also added to the pressure. I decided to use my knowledge from yesterday's lesson where I used ruffled paper. I started to fill the structure up with these paper models which would help bounce and protect the structure of my spaghetti. Although at the end of my design I knew it wouldn't work I knew that the style of it was very unique which I liked. This is something that I hated, I knew that I couldn't protect the structure fully and I dislike destroying my work. Today's lesson helped me to get over this fear and will help with letting go with my work.
To end today we tested the protection and found out that the weight was going to be a basketball that bounced on top of our structures. I decided to film this to show what happened.

As you can see and hear from the video a lot of people's work smashed including mine however it did give a sense of bounce back reaction which differed from others styles. The structure was not as broken as I thought it was going to be and if I rethought the design it could have worked better.
